...and one of the reasons I love this man so much.
It's just a normal Sunday evening. We went to the art museum today, watched The Simpsons, and then I turn around and he is dressed up with leggings, shorts, a Twins shirt, Phish hat and Vikings helmet cooking me dinner. All I can do is sit back, watch, laugh and eat damn good food.
Surprisingly, raccoons must like tandoori vegetables.
Last night, Jon and I were sitting out on our back deck having a late dinner. He grilled up some fabulous tandoori veggies and naan. Early on during dinner, I thought I had heard some rustling in the bushes, but assumed it was our neighbor's cat, Furina. Little did I know, that we had two raccoons stalking us! They poked their heads through the vines on the back of our deck - just over 3 feet from where I was sitting! The buggers were really cute - but that's a little too close for comfort.
Since moving to Denver a month and a half ago, Jon and I have been very good about getting up to the mountains (or at least the foothills) about once a week to go for a hike. The closest hikes are within 20 minutes of our house and offer incredible views, good ascents and a great workout without the challenges that you encounter at higher elevation. The hikes a bit further into the mountains (40 minutes to 1 1/2 hours drive) definitely provide us with more of a challenge, but the views are unsurpassed.
Today, we headed up to Summit County for the first time since being back in Colorado and it was great to pass through the Eisenhower tunnel and look out across the other side of the Continental Divide. We chose Buffalo Mountain as our hike today. It starts out gradually for the first mile and a half and then shoots up 2,000 feet over the next mile. While I am going to seriously feel this in my legs tomorrow, it offered up some of the greatest views I've seen thus far.
We maxed out at just over 11,500 feet and looked back towards the Continental Divide with all of it's 14ers and down on Lake Dillon crowded with sailboats. Absolutely amazing. Enjoy this 360 degree view.
We didn't quite make it to the top - #1: a storm started heading in (as you can see in the video); and #2: it was a massive boulder field that went straight up about 1,000 feet. We made our way through part of it, but decided to head back early. I felt the need to challenge myself and test out the boulder field in preparation for an upcoming backpacking trip next weekend. Matt is coming into town and we are heading up to Indian Peaks Wilderness Area for an overnight trip and will attempt to conquer Lone Eagle Peak. I got myself a helmet and will be relying heavily on Matt's expertise to get me up and down safely.
Anyway, back to today's hike...Living in Denver and not knowing all that many people, I don't typically run into people I know at random. Because I had lived in Minneapolis for most of my life, these things seemed to happen a bit more frequently. I enjoy these random encounters and wish they would happen more than they do. Well, today, I got lucky. While just starting out the hike, we ran into Steve Pennisi. This is a friend from college that I haven't seen in probably 6+ years. Very cool! And, even better, he lives in Summit County, so hopefully we'll see him more.
I'm headed out to the airport again in the morning - this time to Dallas for a short 2-day trip. Upon my return to Denver, I'm looking forward to seeing Matty, heading back up to the mountains and then going to see Yonder Mountain String Band at Red Rocks on Sunday!
As though you haven't heard enough about how excited Matt, Jon, Joy and I are to be going to Mexico in 9 days, I thought I'd share with you a webcam that is housed on top of the dive shop at our hotel. This way, you can sit at your desk and watch us bask in the glorious warm sunshine.
Seriously, I haven't been this excited since a year and 1 day ago when Jon and I got married at this very same place.
