Over the last few months, I have spent countless hours in airports and on planes traveling to places like Raleigh (twice), San Jose/San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, Cancun and, most recently, Washington, D.C. I typically don't mind traveling, except for when I encounter annoying or narrow-minded travelers.
Yesterday, while waiting to board my plane in Minneapolis, I was sitting next to a man talking on his cellphone telling the person at the other end that he was "in the middle of nowhere...specifically Minne-no-place." I was quite taken back by this statement. While I understand that the Twin Cities are not a major metropolis like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles, the metropolitan population is 3.2MM - making it the 16th largest metropolitan area in the US. Not too shabby. In addition, if the man would actually take the time to explore the area, he would find that the Twin Cities are not only beautiful, but rich in culture and in history, albeit short. Just look at the pictures below and try to tell me that this is a city that should be considered to be "no place" on the map of the United States.
Recently, Jon and I have tried to take advantage of the cultural offerings available in Minneapolis...they include the Mill City Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Bakken Museum and more. If you live in Minneapolis and haven't taken the time to explore the museums or attend the theater - you are missing out on some of the greatest assets of the city.
On the other end of the spectrum, I am now sitting in my hotel room in Strasburg, VA. I'm sure most of you have never heard of it, but is a town of about 4,000 residents and is nestled in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If that still doesn't help you...it's about 75 miles west of Washington, D.C. I'm here for the NAA Digital Media Fellowship site visit. The area is beautiful, but we are seriously out there. Although, I still wouldn't be so rude as to call it "no place" - and especially around people that live here. But that's just me.
No one appreciates Spring quite like Minnesotans do. After 4-5 months of cold weather and not enough snow to go xc-skiing or enough vertical to go downhill skiing, we all come out of hibernation and bask in the sun's glory like no other on the planet...okay, maybe just the Western Hemisphere.
This is the first day of 2007 that we've gotten above 40 degrees and everyone and his/her brother/sister are outside walking around the lakes and enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Jon and I did just the same. We woke up this morning and headed to The Bad Waitress for breakfast. Then, after a bit of Spring cleaning at home (we got rid of another 2 bags of crap), we walked around Lake Harriett to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine and then headed back to The Bad Waitress for Happy Hour to sit outside and enjoy a nice glass of wine/beer in the sunshine. I'm sorry - did I already mention sunshine? Can you tell that I'm excited?
Something physiologically morphs in me when the weather starts to get warm and the sun shines. Just look at the pure happiness on the faces of Jon and me.
I have wanted to go to the Holidazzle Parade every year since we moved back from Denver. Yet, year after year, the holiday season comes and goes and, somehow, I miss it. Well, this year, I finally made it. And, well, it's really just a parade, but with lights. Maybe if there would have been snow on the ground or below 45 degrees or more people there, it would have been better. But, then again, maybe I'm just not that into parades anymore. Anyway, here are some pics.
Afterwards, Jon and I saw Tartuffe at the Jeune Lune and got to snap a picture of their Tony Award that they won last year.
