Today is Jon's and my 2nd wedding anniversary. Two years ago today at 5pm, we were married on the beach in Playa del Carmen with our closest friends and family present. It was absolutely fabulous!!
Last year, to celebrate our 1st anniversary, we returned to Playa with Matt & Joy and had an amazing time relaxing on the beach. Okay, so this picture makes it look like we are anywhere but Mexico - but I promise you - this was actually taken in Playa.
This year, Jon and I decided to take advantage of the mountains so nearby. We headed up to Beaver Creek Saturday evening, with a pit-stop at the Wolf Rock Grill in Keystone to visit my cousin, Michelle, and her husband, Eddie.
We skied on Sunday at Beaver Creek. The snow was great! We hung out in the outdoor hottub. We watched the first half of the Super Bowl at Coyota Cafe. And then...we went on a sleigh ride to Beano's Cabin on the mountain at Beaver Creek. It was so cool! It was snowing out, which made it even better.
Once we arrived at Beano's Cabin, we had the most wonderful 5-course meal. I forgot to take a picture of the salad - but here are pictures of the 4 other courses.
First Course: Chef's Amuse - Fennel Soup
Second Course: Mixed Green Salad with blue cheese and cashews
Third Course: me - Scallops; Jon - Duo Beet Salad
Fourth Course: me - Sea Bass; Jon - Trout
Fifth Course: Triple Desserts - creme brule, tiramisu and chocolate bisque
Everything was absolutely amazing!
As we were on our way out, we were greeted by the neighborhood porcupine. What the hell?
All in all - it was a fantastic anniversary weekend. Although - we did decide that we're going somewhere warm next year!
For the last 50+ years, Warren Miller has been creating adrenaline rushing, heart pounding movies about extreme skiing. They generally include skiers (and now boarders) jumping off 30-250+ foot cliffs, dropping into a couloir with a 45+ degree angle and some all-around exceptional skiing. But now, he has taken it to another level with Parachute Skiing. This clip isn't from the latest Warren Miller movie - but I found a different example of it on YouTube. This shit is pretty insane!
Okay, so I know Jon already posted about this - but I am so damn excited, I had to post too.
I just renewed my season pass for the 2007-2008 ski season. It includes Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail, Beaver Creek, 1/2 price lift tickets to Heavenly - and Arapahoe Basin - WHICH OPENS TOMORROW!!! October 10th! The earliest opening in the area's 61-year history.
You know what that means? That's right! I'm going to be skiing down this run in just 4 short days!!!
I haven't skied in almost 3 years, so it's probably good that there is only one run open. I can break back into it slowly and practice up for the rest of the season.
Jon and I went to the premiere showing of Warren Miller's Off the Grid last night at the State Theatre. We had toyed with the idea of skipping it due to last year's horribly blatant product placement throughout the entire movie. Picture this, 3 people hanging out at the top of a slope with a gigantic Nature Valley granola bar eating it and talking about how good it is. Now really, is that necessary or effective? Anyway, they must have received tons of criticism because this year's advertising was quite subtle - signs in the background, scanning over logos on skis and such. Advertising means, I think, we can all live with. The movie was good - great mountain scenes and lots of crazy skiing. It definitely got me in the mood to move go to Colorado and hit the slopes - although, not nearly in the same fashion as they do.
